Montana Women For will present a reading and book signing with Elsie Fox and author Karen Stevenson at the Livingston Public Library at 6:30 PM on May 21st.

Born in a log cabin on the Powder River in 1907, Elsie is celebrating her 102nd year as a political activist. Committed to issues from women’s rights to racism, justice for workers and support for unions, Elsie continues to be feisty and politically active. Her newly published biography, “Elsie Fox: Portrait of an Activist” was written by Karen Stevenson of Miles City.

Fox came of age in the rip-roaring decade of the twenties and witnessed the Depression in Seattle, which led her to discover Marxism and a like-minded husband. Those relationships led her to San Francisco and the International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union where she worked for twenty – eight years.

The book includes photos and paints a vivid picture of a woman who fights for what she believes, always asking, “If we don’t take action when there are real problems in the world, then what are we?” After a presentation by Ms. Fox, she and Ms. Stevenson will take questions from the audience and autograph copies of the book, which will be for sale at the event.

Former Montana State Representative Dorothy Bradley will salute Ms. Fox for her lifetime of commitment and activism.

Immediately following the presentation, there will be a reception at 7:45 pm in the lobby of the Murray Hotel. Refreshments will be served. For more information on Ms. Fox, enter her name into your search engine.

Thank you Margie and Montana Women For for hosting this event for Elsie…She is very excited to do this and is such a “legend in her own time”.

Karen took Elsie to the Governor’s Council on Aging in Glendive where they honored her as a centenarian. I told her she was the snazziest centenarian there! She gave a great little speech, asking folks if they knew where the idea for Social Security originated. Then went on to tell them it was Peter Townsend. That most good ideas come from the people and not from Government. Her final comment “Power to the People!”

Then we went on to sell 28 books! Have a great event…I will be there in spirit.
