Sisters in Law, on Wednesday, January 23 at 7 p.m. in
MSU’s Procrastinator Theatre (125 Linfield). FREE.
Winner of the Prix Art et Essai at the Cannes Film Festival and screened at 120 festivals around the world, Sisters in Law is the hottest documentary from worldwide recognized director Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayisi. Sisters in Law is a totally fascinating, often hilarious look at the work of one small courthouse in Cameroon, Africa where two women determined to change a village are making progress that could change the world. The tough-minded state prosecutor Vera Ngassa and Judge Beatrice Ntaba are working to help women in their Muslim village find the courage to fight often-difficult cases of abuse, despite pressures from family and their community to remain silent. The cases are appalling, ranging from the rape of young girls to abusive husbands, but the movie doesn’t depress. With fierce compassion, Vera Ngassa and Judge Beatrice Ntaba dispense wisdom, wisecracks and justice in fair measure – handing down stiff sentences to the convicted.
